My Thank You to the Hill & Lake Press

I am filled with so much gratitude—thank you for the meaningful tribute given to me upon my retirement.

It truly was an honor to photograph this neighborhood (the best “hood” in the world, according to Jim Lenfestey, writing about it in one of his earlier Urban Coyote columns).

I will miss the formal assignments for the newspaper (and the access granted by a press pass!), but you will still find me out and about—always with my camera.

I plan to spend the winter preparing all of my Hill & Lake Press photographs and tear-sheets for donation to the Special Collections Department of the Hennepin County Central Library, where they will be digitized and placed on their website.

When this project is complete, you may read all about it in Hill & Lake Press.

Thank you again, Craig. The paper is in good hands.

Dorothy Childers was the staff photographer of the Hill & Lake Press for 34 years. She retired last month. Dorothy resides in Cedar-Isles-Dean.

SW LRT Update

As part of the construction of the Kenilworth LRT Tunnel in Minneapolis, Cedar Lake Parkway has been closed to vehicle traffic since May, 2022. For the duration of this closure, the project has committed to preserving trail access across the corridor in proximity to Cedar Lake Parkway.

The new temporary bridge is currently under construction. By early to mid-January, trail access will shift from the current location at Depot Street to the north, closer to Cedar Lake Parkway. Signage and striping will guide trail users along the relocated temporary path. This temporary trail alignment is expected to remain in place until Cedar Lake Parkway is reopened to traffic in spring 2023. (GreenLineExt.org)

Wishing For Snow

As another chaotic election season collides with an unseasonably warm fall, gratitude feels complicated. Between politics, climate change and human suffering, maybe the best we can do this Thanksgiving is find small moments of hope — and wish for snow.

‘Minneapolis for the Many’ PAC: Issues Apology to Local Landlord

The progressive PAC Minneapolis for the Many was forced to publicly retract and apologize after falsely labeling Minneapolis landlord Jim Rubin a “negligent landlord.” The group admitted its claims were untrue and acknowledged Rubin’s work to preserve older buildings and maintain naturally occurring affordable housing — a rare reversal in the middle of an already heated election cycle.

Temple Israel Defaced Again, Less Than a Year After First Incident

In a disturbing repeat of last year’s vandalism, Temple Israel was defaced again — this time with Hamas-linked graffiti on the second anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks. Community leaders swiftly condemned the act as a hate crime, while police and the FBI launched an investigation into the antisemitic messages.
