For the Want of a Pawn

(Self portrait and poem by Malcolm J. Roberts (9) who lives in Lowry Hill and attends Eagle Ridge Academy)

For the want of a pawn,
the bishop was lost.

For the want of a bishop,
the knight was lost.

For the want of a knight,
the rook was lost.

For the want of a rook,
the queen was lost.

For the want of the queen,
the king was lost.

All for the want of a pawn.

I love the way the ball goes “whoosh-cu”
After a perfect shot
How the ball lightly rotates
After you perfect every part of the shot.

I love the way I attack
I slide and glide and,
Hustle and grind,
When you perfect that, you can say you have a talent.

I love the rhythm and rhyme of a dribble,
Changing speeds, it's like you can predict where the
ball’s gonna land
Like it's all conducted.

But I hate when you practice and practice
and come game time, you're stuck up in your head.
I hate when your teammates like to play,
But you crave it.

I hate losing, but also winning dirty.
Losing because of a tiny detail you missed
or one opportunity that was unsuccessful.

You're going to love things in life.
You're going to hate things in life.
But things are only pointless if you do not
grow from them.

Just when you think you’ve figured out who makes the decisions, another committee appears. Some facts corrected. Some questions answered. Some skepticism preserved for future use.
